چکیده

We consider the problem of learning a Bayesian network or directed acyclic graph (DAG) model from observational data. A number of constraint-based, score-based and hybrid algorithms have been developed for this purpose. For constraint-based methods, statistical consistency guarantees typically rely on the faithfulness assumption, which has been show to be restrictive especially for graphs with cycles in the skeleton. However, there is only limited work on consistency guarantees for score-based and hybrid algorithms and it has been unclear whether consistency guarantees can be proven under weaker conditions than the faithfulness assumption. In this paper, we propose the sparsest permutation (SP) algorithm. This algorithm is based on finding the causal ordering of the variables that yields the sparsest DAG. We prove that this new score-based method is consistent under strictly weaker conditions than the faithfulness assumption. We also demonstrate through simulations on small DAGs that the SP algorithm compares favorably to the constraintbased PC and SGS algorithms as well as the score-based Greedy Equivalence Search and hybrid MaxMin Hill-Climbing method. In the Gaussian setting, we prove that our algorithm boils down to finding the permutation of the variables with sparsest Cholesky decomposition for the inverse covariance matrix. Using this connection, we show that in the oracle setting, where the true covariance matrix is known, the SP algorithm is in fact equivalent to `0-penalized maximum likelihood estimation.

Cut-Matching Games on Directed Graphs

We give O(log n)-approximation algorithm based on the cut-matching framework of [10, 13, 14] for the computing the sparsest cut on directed graphs. Our algorithm uses only O(log n) single commodity max-flow computations and thus breaks the multicommodity-flow barrier for computing the sparsest cut on directed graphs.

Small Superpatterns for Dominance Drawing

We exploit the connection between dominance drawings of directed acyclic graphs and permutations, in both directions, to provide improved bounds on the size of universal point sets for certain types of dominance drawing and on superpatterns for certain natural classes of permutations. In particular we show that there exist universal point sets for dominance drawings of the Hasse diagrams of wid...

Comparing Network Coding with Multicommodity Flow for the k-pairs Communication Problem

Given a graph G = (V, E) and k source-sink pairs of vertices, this papers investigates the maximum rate r at which all pairs can simultaneously communicate. We view this problem from two perspectives and compare their advantages. In the multicommodity flow formulation, a solution provides dedicated bandwidth r between each source-sink pair. In the information flow formulation, a vertex can tran...

Processing directed acyclic graphs with recursive neural networks

Recursive neural networks are conceived for processing graphs and extend the well-known recurrent model for processing sequences. In Frasconi et al. (1998), recursive neural networks can deal only with directed ordered acyclic graphs (DOAGs), in which the children of any given node are ordered. While this assumption is reasonable in some applications, it introduces unnecessary constraints in ot...

Learning Markov Equivalence Classes of Directed Acyclic Graphs: an Objective Bayes Approach

A Markov equivalence class contains all the Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAGs) encoding the same conditional independencies, and is represented by a Completed Partially Directed DAG (CPDAG), also named Essential Graph (EG). We approach the problem of model selection among noncausal sparse Gaussian DAGs by directly scoring EGs, using an objective Bayes method. Specifically, we construct objective pr...
